Catskills Lean-To Crew

Kelly Hollow Worktrip 5/17-5/19

For the second weekend in a row, the Catskills Lean-To Crew will be working on the Kelly Hollow Lean-To.

The Kelly Hollow Lean-to (at the western edge of the Central Catskills Trail Map #142) will be getting a new roof and other improvements. The Lean-To Crew is beginning their work from 5/9-5/12.

This is the second and hopefully final weekend of work, to finish the project as needed.

WORK WEEKENDS:
1) Thursday to Sunday May 9th-12th
2) Friday to Sunday May 17th - 19th (to finish the project as needed)
The scope of the work is finishing up the project, which may include:

• Remove old roofing materials. Repairing roof boards as needed.
• Install new roof singles.
• Clear debris from around shelter, improve drainage, and stain the lower logs of the shelter.
• Build stone patio to reduce mud in front of the shelter

PARKING / HIKE IN / WATER / SHELTER:
PARKING - We will be meeting at the more westerly parking area to access the Kelly Hollow Trail - 42°04'43.8"N 74°39'20.8"W. Drive in, and park in one of the camping sites at the end of the short dirt road, without blocking the turnaround.
HIKE IN -The Lean to is about 1.5 miles up a wide and gentile hill in the vicinity of a former beaver pond. Do not circle around the former pond. Cross the breached outlet dam to reach the shelter.
WATER - Is available from the pond outlet, near the shelter. A filter is suggested.
CARPOOLING - is encouraged. Eric will facilitate. (Driving time from Mid Town NYC is 2 ½ - 3 hours)
WHEN: May 17th - May 19th
CAMPING: You can either come for the day or stay at the shelter to make a fun volunteer trip out of the experience! Eric will spend Friday and Saturday night. The shelter is available for sleeping.
WHAT TO BRING: Lunch and snacks, sturdy shoes, water, safety glasses, gloves, bug dope, and a headlight for the hike out. If you’ll be spending the night, bring your necessary overnight gear and food. Tools etc. will be supplied. For those staying over we do a combination of shared and individual food.
MINORS under 18 will need to fill out a Guardian Consent Form, with a parent or guardian present during the worktrip.
